# Lifestyles
The world of 2095 has six levels of Lifestyle, each corresponding with a die-step.
This is not an Attribute die, but acts like one. Wild Cards get their Wild Die, you may spend Bennies to reroll, and other individuals may Support you, under correct circumstances.
### Rolling the Lifestyle Check
At the start of each in-game month, each character determines their choice for a lifestyle.
They have three options:
- [[#Tough it out|Tough it Out]] - Live below their Lifestyle Die
- [[#Living within one's means|Live Within Their Means]] - Live at their Lifestyle Die
- [[#Living it up|Live it Up]] - Live above their Lifestyle Die
The character then makes a Lifestyle Check roll.
##### Living within one's means
If living within your means, the following rules apply.
A success means you maintain your lifestyle, no problem. On a raise, the character has a windfall of some sort, and gains a point of Savings.
On a failure, the character has some unexpected expense. They may spend one Savings to get by, or live one lifestyle die-step lower than their current means.
On a Crit Fail, the character runs into a financial disaster. They must spend three Savings, or drop two lifestyle die-steps.
> [!TIP] Supporting the Lifestyle Check
> If a Supporting character bolsters a failed Lifestyle Check, they suffer a penalty. They suffer a -1 to their own Lifestyle Check on failure, and -2 on a Crit Fail.
>
> Supporting characters can use their Savings to help their own Lifestyle Checks, but not for other characters' checks.

#### Living it up
If you want to live it up, you may roll a Lifestyle above your LD. This imparts a -2 modifier to your Lifestyle Check per each die-step you increase by.
If the check is successful, it comes with a cost. You must reduce your Lifestyle Die by one level for the next month only. Success with a raise means the lifestyle comes at no cost, and you can roll your typical die next month.
On a failure, they couldn't get the cryptos together. Any Savings spent on the check is lost, and the character must live according to their current Lifestyle die.
On a Crit Fail, the character reaches too far. The Savings are lost, and the character's Lifestyle drops one die-step below its current.
#### Tough it out
A character may also tough it out, or live a Lifestyle lower than their Lifestyle Die. This confers a +2 modifier to your Lifestyle Check for every die-step below their usual Lifestyle.
On success, they live that lowered Lifestyle and gain a Savings. Two Savings with a raise.
On failure, they've mismanaged things. They lived the lowered Lifestyle without accruing any Savings. On a Crit Fail they live the lowered Lifestyle and must pay a Savings, or live one Lifestyle die-step lower than their current.
### Savings
Savings is an abstract measure of a character's accumulated cash for rough times.
You may gain savings through either a Windfall, or Toughing it Out. You can accrue as many Savings as you wish.
You can spend a Savings to get a +1 modifier on your Lifestyle Checks. You may also spend Savings in certain circumstances to prevent yourself from dropping into poverty.
### Increasing the Lifestyle Die
It's recommended for most characters to increase the Lifestyle Die one step every Advance, or every other Advance.
The exception is police characters, who might have fixed salaries. This may change on in in-game promotion.
### Edges and Lifestyle Checks
Characters with [[IZ3 Available Edges#Rich|Rich]] gain a die-step on their Lifestyle Die. Characters with [[IZ3 Available Edges#Filthy Rich|Filthy Rich]] gain two die-steps.
[[IZ3 Available Edges#Fame|Fame]] grants you a +1 to your Lifestyle Check. [[IZ3 Available Edges#Famous|Famous]] grants you a +2. People want to give you stuff, when you're famous.
[[IZ3 Available Edges#Streetwise|Streetwise]] may be used to gain deals out of shady characters and less-than-legal means. Of course, a failure while trying to use this may result in ingame consequences.
Lastly, [[IZ3 Available Edges#Connections|Connections]] may be dedicated to Lifestyle, granting a +2 to all their Lifestyle Checks.
